Often, composers who are starting out with orchestral VIs have some knowledge of the instruments they will be writing for. However, this is not always the case, nor does it have to be.
There are literally hundreds of videos on YouTube, featuring excellent performers on every instrument imaginable, and they go far beyond the orchestral realm.
Anytime you’re working with a virtual instrument that you like, and want to use, but know next-to-nothing about, do a quick search on YouTube, and check out the instrument’s article on Wikipedia.
Below is a link to the Philharmonia Orchestra’s YouTube playlist, called “Instrument Guides.” All instruments of the orchestra are covered in these videos, and they can offer a great deal of insight into the performance of your virtual instruments.

Treat your virtual instruments like the real thing, and whether they are the best on the market, or on the lower-quality end of the spectrum, you will achieve better results in your finished product.
