Goldsmith’s Moviola

It’s a little mind-blowing to see Jerry Goldsmith watching a film on a moviola around 4:40 in this video.

Today we watch the media we’re scoring with such ease, and in high definition. Yet somehow modern film scores, as good as any of them may be, don’t seem to benefit musically from the workflow efficiency and time saving aspects of today’s technology. Many of them are lighter and less musical than they were back when guys like Goldsmith were working with limitations most of us cannot even imagine.
